Home maintenance to keep your property safe.
Every homeowner wants to protect the safety of his or her home. Simple prevention and maintenance tasks mean that the home is kept in good condition and the homeowner can detect errors or issues that could lead to damage or theft. To prevent harm from coming to your property, check out these affordable fixes.
Check your appliances. Your home’s appliances are the most common source of water leaks in homes, so it’s worth taking a look at least once a year to check for problems. Look for kinks and cracks in hoses leading into your washer and dishwasher, and consider using reinforced hoses for added security. Clean out your dryer exhaust hose to reduce the chance for fire.
Add stability to stairs. Are your home’s railings rickety and old? If so, consider replacing them with new rails. Add non-slip strips, particularly to outdoor stairs, to prevent slips and trips.
Install brighter lights. Dimly lit areas in and around your house pose a safety hazard for your family. Make sure all areas are well lit and replace bulbs with brighter ones, if necessary.
Add deadbolts. All outside facing windows and doors should have a deadbolt in place.
Invest in motion sensors. Just having some outside lights that flick on when they detect movement can be enough to spook away a thief. Motion lights are affordable and can be found at most hardware stores.
Test the detectors. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Check them regularly to ensure they’re in good condition, replacing the batteries if needed. Also, consider testing your home for radon, a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that can be dangerous over time.
Replace your filters. Keep your furnace filter and air ducts clean by replacing the filter often. A clogged filter can cause the system to work harder, pulling in more energy, as well as recycling poor quality air. Additionally, consider adding some of nature’s air filters: plants!
