Now that summer is drawing to a close, parents and kids are growing excited because they know that school is here again. As you prepare to go back to school, it’s important to keep safety uppermost in your mind.
Parents should remind their children about maintaining their personal safety, especially when they walk or take a bus to and from school each day.
Kids should not get into a stranger’s vehicle, for example, or accept gifts such as snacks or toys from someone they do not know. It’s a good idea for students to walk in groups for added safety. Kids should also know that they need to go get a grownup, such as a teacher, coach or police officer if they find themselves in an unsafe situation.
For additional peace of mind, parents will want to provide their children with an emergency whistle to keep in their backpack. At the first sign of danger, kids simply need to blow on the whistle to sound the alarm for an adult to step in and help them out.
